A fortified medievel village on the slopes of a hill catching attention from a distance. Stanjel is one of the oldest and most picturesque villages in the Karst Region of Slovenia. The village houses a Renaissance Baroque castle and the late Gothic Period Saint Daniel's Church. In defense against Turkish invasions in the 15th century a wall was built around the village. Only in the 19th century homes began to be built outside the protective wall. The village of Stanjel was badly damaged in WWII and has not been fully restored since.
