A fortified medievel village on the slopes of a hill catching attention from a distance. Stanjel is one of the oldest and most picturesque villages in the Karst Region of Slovenia. The village houses a Renaissance Baroque castle and the late Gothic Period Saint Daniel's Church. In defense against Turkish invasions in the 15th century a wall was built around the village. Only in the 19th century homes began to be built outside the protective wall.
