Stock Photo Description: This is a photograph of a juvinile bald eagle taken at the McNeil River Brown Bear Santuary in Alaska. Thier latin name is Haliaeetus luecocephalus. The Bald Eagle lives nowhere on earth except North America. Juvinile birds are a mix of brown and white with adult plummage developing at 4-5 years of age. Average lifespan is about 15-20 years. The eagle is at the top of the food chain making them vulnerable to toxic chemicals in the environmenent. Currently Bald Eagles are protected by the endangered species act and are classified as threatened in all the continental US except for Alaska.
