Stock Photo Description: Stock photo of a graceful statue by the American artist Maria Louisa Lander of an adult Virginia Dare, the first English child born in the New World. Sculpted of Carrara marble in Italy in 1859. In 1923, Lander willed the statue to the State of North Carolina; when Fort Raleigh, near the town of Manteo on Roanoke Island, became a National Historic Site and the Elizabethan Gardens were created, the statue was placed in its present location, among lush green trees near the site of the infamous Lost Colony, almost 100 years after her creation.
